Caramelized Onions

Caramelized onions and a bowl of yellow onions

Sweet, savory, and truly delicious, caramelized onions are a favorite in my kitchen for their flavor and versatility.

When you have the time (2 hours or so), making caramelized onions is a relatively simple process that requires a bit of chopping, seasoning, and occasional stirring. Begin by cutting 10-12 onions into slices. Opt for a variety of yellow, red, and white onions.

Add your onions to a large pot with olive oil, agave, salt, and red pepper flakes. Cook on low heat for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes or so. After the onions turn translucent, add garlic, balsamic vinegar, red wine, and soy sauce, and allow this to cook down until your onions are perfectly caramelized.

Pair with pasta, pizza, paninis, and whatever you please!

Equipment

  • Large pot

Ingredients

  • 10 - 12 onions (yellow, white, and/or red)

  • 3 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp agave

  • 1-2 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp red pepper flakes

  • 6 cloves garlic

  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

  • 1 tsp soy sauce

  • 1/2 cup red wine

Instructions

  1. Slice onions and add to a large pot

  2. Add olive oil, agave, salt, and red pepper flakes. Mix and cook on low heat for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes

  3. Add minced garlic, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, and red wine to the pot

  4. Allow to cook another 30 minutes - 1 hour, or until all of the liquid has been absorbed and turned into a thick caramelized syrup

  5. Remove from heat and serve in sandwiches, plates of pasta, and your favorite dishes

NOTES

If your onions start to stick to the bottom of the pot, add a splash of water. The onions will absorb the moisture.
