Vegan “In-N-Out” Animal Style Impossible Burger

Homemade “In-N-Out” Animal Style Vegan Impossible Burger
If you're a fan of the classic “In-N-Out” burger, but follow a plant-based lifestyle, then you're in for a treat! With the rise in popularity of plant-based alternatives, creating a homemade “In-N-Out” Animal Style Vegan Impossible Burger is not only possible but also incredibly delicious.
To start off, you'll need a few key ingredients:

  • Vegan Impossible Burger patties: The Impossible Burger is a fantastic meat substitute that closely mimics the texture and taste of beef. It's made entirely from plants, yet it provides a juicy and satisfying burger experience.

  • Vegan cheese: Look for a vegan cheese alternative that melts well, such as a dairy-free American or cheddar-style cheese. Nowadays, there are numerous options available that are both creamy and savory. Our favorite is Good Planet dairy-free cheddar cheese slices. Pro tip: add a little bit of water to a pan with your Impossible burger and cheese, then cover for 5 mins for the best cheese melt!

  • Vegan “Special Sauce”: This tangy and creamy sauce is a staple in the classic “In-N-Out” Animal Style burger. To make your own, use a combination of plant-based mayo, ketchup, pickle relish, with a touch of tamari and liquid smoke. Find our full homemade recipe below!

  • Caramelized onions: Another classic of “In-N-Out” Animal Style: their deliciously charred grilled onions. Once you figure out how to re-create these at home, you’ll suddenly be putting them on everything - beware.

  • Burger buns: Look for vegan burger buns that are soft, fresh, and able to hold up well with all the toppings. We use gluten-free buns, but feel free to use your favorite!

  • Lettuce, tomato, and onion: These classic burger toppings add freshness and crunch to your creation. Be sure to use fresh and quality produce for the best taste.

Now let's get cooking:
1. Start by prepping your toppings. Wash and thinly slice the tomatoes, onion, and lettuce, if you choose to use them. Set them aside, preferably in the refrigerator to keep them cool and crisp.

2. Prepare your caramelized onions by cooking in a pan with oil until browned and slightly charred. Add in some liquid smoke for an effortless smokey, grilled flavor.

3. Cook your Vegan Impossible Burger patties according to the package instructions. You can typically pan-fry, grill, or oven-bake them to your desired level of done-ness. Remember to season them with salt and pepper to enhance the flavor.

4. In a separate pan, grill your burger buns until they are lightly toasted. This step helps to prevent the buns from getting soggy when layered with the dressing and toppings.

5. Once your patties are cooked, place a slice of vegan cheese on each patty, allowing it to melt slightly before removing from the heat.

6. Now it's time to build your masterpiece. On the bottom half of the burger bun, spread a generous amount of vegan “Special Sauce”. Add a layer of lettuce, followed by a couple of tomato slices, caramelized onions, and your juicy Impossible burger.

7. Enjoy with a side of animal-style fries! Who needs take-out anyways?
